Home charging is where almost all EV charging happens, and it is the reason running an electric car is cheaper than a petrol one in most of the US and Europe. But the choice between plugging into a normal outlet (Level 1) and installing a 240V wall charger (Level 2) changes charging speed dramatically, and, thanks to time-of-use tariffs, it can change the price per mile too. Here is what each option really costs.

Level 1 vs Level 2: speed, not price per kWh

A Level 1 charger is the cable that comes with the car. Plugged into a standard 120V outlet it draws about 12 amps, roughly 1.4kW, and adds 3-5 miles of range per hour, so 12 overnight hours gives 40-60 miles. That is enough for the average US commute of about 40 miles a day but leaves no headroom. A Level 2 charger runs on a 240V circuit at 32-48 amps, roughly 7.6-11.5kW, adding 25-40 miles of range per hour and refilling most batteries overnight from near empty. Both deliver the same kWh into the battery for the same price; charging losses are slightly higher on Level 1 (around 12-15% versus 8-10%) because the car's onboard systems stay awake longer.

What a full charge actually costs

Multiply your usable battery size by your rate. A 75 kWh battery charged from 20% to 80% takes about 45 kWh plus roughly 10% charging losses, so about 50 kWh from the wall. At $0.16/kWh that is $8.00 for roughly 200 miles of range, about 4 cents a mile. The same charge at a California rate of $0.30/kWh is $15.00, and on a UK EV tariff with a 7.5p/kWh overnight rate it is £3.75. Public DC fast charging in the US commonly runs $0.40-$0.60/kWh, three to four times the cost of the same electricity at home, which is why home charging is the core economic argument for EV ownership.

Off-peak tariffs are where Level 2 pays for itself

Most EV-specific tariffs put their cheapest window between roughly midnight and 6-7am. In the UK, dedicated EV tariffs offer overnight rates near 7-8p/kWh against a 26p day rate, so charging entirely off-peak cuts fuelling cost by about 70%. In the US, TOU plans often price overnight power at $0.10-$0.12 against $0.30+ during the late-afternoon peak. Level 1 charging at 1.4kW frequently cannot fit a full charge into a six-hour cheap window, so you end up paying peak rates for part of the session. Level 2 finishes inside the window, which is often the real financial case for the installation rather than raw speed.

Installation costs and payback

A Level 2 charger costs roughly $400-$800 for the unit and $500-$1,500 for a licensed electrician to run a 240V circuit, more if the panel needs an upgrade. Utility rebates and tax credits often cover a meaningful share; check your utility's EV programme before buying. If a TOU tariff saves you $0.15/kWh on 300 kWh a month, that is $45 a month, and a $1,200 installation pays back in a little over two years. If you drive under 30 miles a day and have no TOU tariff, Level 1 is genuinely sufficient and the installation is hard to justify.
